Gunnarsson Retires From NHL After 12 Seasons

Carl Gunnarsson, who helped the St. Louis Blues to their first ever Stanley Cup Championship announced his retirement from the game after twelve seasons.

A knee injury sustained by the 34-year-old defenseman ended his season and his career on February 22 against the Los Angeles Kings. He was limited to 2 assists in 12 games this year and is in the final year of two contract that was signed on June 27, 2019.

“I would like to thank all of my former teammates and head coaches for making my career possible especially to everyone from the St. Louis Blues organization. It’s been a wild ride with some ups and downs, but it was great!” said Gunnarsson.

A veteran of 629 games in the NHL, the Orebro Sweden native scored 30 goals to go with 108 assists and 138 points with the Blues and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Gunnarsson has been with the Blues as part of a trade that sent Roman Polak to Toronto.

His goal in Game two of the 2019 Stanley Cup Finals will certainly never be forgotten for some time.
